Course Overview
This course has been designed for those with a strong working knowledge of French, level B2 of the European Framework.
You may have learnt French to a high level in school, have visited France or French speaking countries regularly or have been learning French yourself for a number of years. The class is taught predominantly through the medium of French. You will be able to understand French in the majority of situations and take part in discussions on a number of different subjects.

The first part of the class is taken up with general conversation. We talk about what you have done in the previous week and any upcoming plans you may have. You will confidently use a variety of tenses.You will be encouraged to ask questions, comment as well as describe your news. We also discuss current affairs and topics of general interest such as differences between French and British culture, recommended films, programmes, plays and books, favourite cuisine or gardening news. The conversation is led by the class.

The second half is more structured and based around the French text book Saison 4 B2, published by Didier. ISBN:978-2-278-08110-3. Blackwell’s Cardiff University bookshop near the Sherman Theatre should be able to order the course book for you or you can find it online.
Different themes are covered each week. The course book includes audio and video material, as well as reading matter of a journalistic nature. These are used as a springboard for further comments, discussions and comparisons. In the first term be will be discussing luxury items, expressing disgust, giving feedback and considering Green issues.

In addition to the textbook Saison 4, a French dictionary, grammar book and access to the internet are all useful for home study. We will also use Complete French Grammar by Annie Heminway, published by McGraw Hill to recap any grammar points the class would like to practise. There is no need to purchase this immediately.
