Course Outline:
● Introduction to oil painting techniques using a limited color palettes
● Exploration of hues, complementaries, neutrals, and creating tints, tones, and shades
● Techniques include "fat over lean" and "block and blend" using brushes and palette knives
● Creating sketches using sanguine and charcoal
● Exploring Techniques - chiaroscuro, composition, plot drawing, form, and mark-making
● Making underpainting (imprimatura) with earth colors
● Building up layers with oil paint until complete.

The oil painting workshops focus on drawing and oil painting techniques without using solvents. Students will explore various themes, including landscape, portrait, still life, architecture, seascape, and expressive abstract ar

● Spring 2025 Term 2A (5 weeks): Still Life
● Spring 2025 Term 2B (6 weeks): Architecture

● Summer 2025 Term 3B (6 weeks): Expressive Abstract

What should I bring to the first lesson?

Materials Required:
● Sketching Supplies:
○ Sketchbook or cartridge paper
○ HB pencils
○ Mid-toned paper (gray or earth tones)
○ Sanguine conte pastel, charcoal, and putty rubber

● Oil Painting Supplies:
○ Brushes: Bristle hair brush round (size 6), brush bright (size 4 and 12), brush filbert (size 4 and 10)
○ Palette knives
○ Wooden or glass palette (gray or clear with paper underneath)
○ Brown packing paper
○ Canvas: Belle Arti Linen 60/568, Universal Primed Medium Grain, 24x30cm
○ Mediums without solvents: Walnut oil, walnut alkyd oil medium
○ Paints: A selection of solvent-free oil colors (M. Graham, Winsor & Newton, or similar)
○ Recommended main colors: Titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red, cadmium yellow pale hue, burnt umber, raw sienna
○ Additional colors: Ultramarine blue, viridian green, alizarin crimson red, cadmium yellow, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, prussian blue, sap green, rose madder, violet, permanent pink, naples yellow

● Sketching Supplies:
○ Sketchbook or cartridge paper
○ HB pencils
○ Mid-toned paper (gray or earth tones)
○ Sanguine conte pastel, charcoal, and putty rubber

Cleaning
● Use cheap hard soap for cleaning brushes
● Have plenty of rags on hand and an apron to protect your clothes
