This course would be useful for anyone who is interested in working with children, for example as a teaching assistant. The course looks at the work of influential child psychologists such as Piaget and Bruner, focussing on their theories of how children learn at different stages of development. We will explore effective teaching strategies, including current methods of teaching literacy in schools. We will compare how children and animals learn through play. Finally, we will look at psychoanalytic theories of play and the ways in which play can help children to express and manage their emotions.
