This course has been designed for those with a strong working knowledge of French ( level B2 of the European Framework). You may have learnt French to a high level in school, have regularly visited France or French speaking countries or have been learning French by yourself or in a class setting for a number of years. You will be able to understand French in the majority of situations.
The course is delivered predominantly through the medium of French and you will take part in discussions on different topics. The aim of the course is to help you develop your spoken French and enjoyment is key. There will also be the opportunity to participate in the Cardiff Nantes Exchange. We will visit Nantes from April 17th-24th 2027 and the French visit Cardiff from June 12th-24th 2027.
The first part of the class is taken up with general conversation where you will confidently use a variety of tenses. We talk about what you have done in the previous week and any upcoming plans you may have. You can choose a topic of general interest to you such as differences between French and British culture, recommended films, TV programmes, plays and books, favourite cuisine, gardening news or current affairs. You will be encouraged to ask questions, comment as well as describe. The conversation is led by the class. It would be useful to subscribe to a free French news channel such as franceinfo.fr to keep up to date with French current affairs.
The second half of the class is more structured and based around podcasts , magazine and newspaper articles.
Different themes are covered each week which are used as a springboard for further comments, discussions and comparisons.
You can subscribe to the free podcast with French transcriptions at innerfrench.com. I will also email you the transcription of the podcast we are working on in class.
