This course is not sitting in front of a mirror and drawing your face. It is a contemporary take on portraits to include persona and self mythology.
Artists we will look at for inspiration include Rembrandt, Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, Vincent Van Gogh etc.
Sessions will include
The Digital Self vs The Private Self
The object self portrait – creating a portrait entirely from objects, clothing etc.
The Historical Self
The Future Self
The Face as Landscape
Masks & Persona
And finally larger work and scaling up.
The course will explore identity through drawing and painting and ask and in an age of selfies, what does it mean to truly represent yourself?
No prior portrait experience needed, suitable for beginners or improvers and we will plan a group exhibition, The Many Selves towards the end of the term.
